A few days ago I went to Waiheke island, off the coast of Auckland. A major tourist attraction, Waiheke island is home to Stony Batter it is called this because of rocks left by volcano’s. In Stony Batter is an abandond New Zealand army base.

During world war II the New Zealand army built huge gun emplacements to defend the Hauraki gulf, the three guns were connected  by a underground network of tunnels. Inside the tunnels are many boiler rooms and gun rooms, although all are now abandoned. The Historic Reserve is now trying to buy back the huge guns to show people how big they were, but it is expensive, to buy an unfuctioning gun will cost more then $300,000 the guns themselves are about twenty metres tall, the barrle is around twelve meters long and the hole thing weighs almost 18 tons!
